‘The Stradivarius’
by Debbi Nelson

This iPhone photo was taken at the Smithsonian in Washington, D.C. Flashes are never allowed in the museum, but I stared at this magnificent instrument, imagining its rich tone and wanting to take a memory of it back home. The Stradivari family of Italy produced these works of musical art during the 17th and 18th centuries. One can’t help but wonder how many times this instrument changed hands over the centuries. What were the different owners like? Were they refined and aristocratic? Or were they mad, creative geniuses? Were they young? Old? You can see how spending a few moments with such a special piece of history can evoke a number of questions as well as a rich appreciation that the piece survived at all!
